In today's society people are very focused on comparing themselves to others. Not only can you compare yourself to those close to you, thanks to the Internet and social media you can compare yourself to people all over the world. However, there are various reasons why comparison to others is unworthy of one’s time and energy. You should not compare yourself to others.
Everyone starts with different conditions; with different advantages and different difficulties. What is easy for someone might be difficult for someone else. Something can be a greater achievement for one person than for another. For example, in school, it can be more impressive that someone passes a class than someone else receiving the highest grade. The person only passing might have been the one putting in most effort. Therefore the comparison regarding the grade does not have big value.
Comparison creates a huge negativity in your life. Usually, whilst comparing yourself to others, you choose to compare yourself with people you believe are better in different aspects. This could result in envy, low self-confidence and self-doubt. Your comparison only leads to you feeling bad about yourself. If you instead compare yourself to those whom seem to be less fortunate, you might feel better with yourself and your life. But this also means that you are taking pleasure in others failures and that cannot be anything positive.
Another reason to not compare yourself to others is the fact that what you are comparing yourself to is most likely inaccurate information. Most people have a tendency to hide the negative aspects of their lives. They choose to display only the positive parts. Everyone wants people to see them as the best they can be, and that does not give a fair comparison. You already know all the positive and negative pieces of your life, but you are probably not aware of all of the negative parts in the life of the person you are comparing yourself to. The results of your comparison are therefore not valid.
One might believe that comparison is a good source of motivation and growth; that competition is necessary for ambition, for doing one’s best. However, I consider this type of comparison merely being time-consuming and ineffective. It will not help you achieve your goals. Support from friends and family is more important than competition for reaching one’s goals. Instead of comparing yourself to others, you should focus on yourself. You should focus on your own values, on completing your goals and becoming who you want to be.
Comparison is and always will be a part of life, but it is up to you how much of an impact it will have on your life. By making an effort to stop comparing yourself to others, the impact on your life will decrease immensely and perhaps you will motivate others to stop comparing themselves to other people. There really is no good reason for you to compare yourself to others, there are however plenty of reasons why you should not.
